On Being a Language Teacher

On Being a Language Teacher Dil Öğretmeni Olmak

"When you arrive the fi rst day of class, you have to remember that THEY
are nervous too. Students are usually concerned about the impact you and
the course are going to have on them: “Am I good enough to pass the class?”
“Will the class be diffi cult?” “Will I be able to understand the teacher?” “Will I
get a good grade?” Contrary to what you may feel, the students won’t care
about YOU, or your hair, your pimples, or your big hips. They will be listening
for information about the class: your offi ce hours, how many exams there
will be, how much the exams will be worth, whether there’s going to be a lot
of homework, whether they’ll be able to carry that study load and possibly
work too, etc. They have their own agenda and you are not in it. It’s not all
about you!
But if you are not convinced about your students’ own self-absorption,
start speaking in the target language and only the target language. Their
eyes will widen, they will lean forward, and they will concentrate hard on
what you are saying and not on you as a person."
