English Equivalents (=eşdeğerleri):

Actions speak louder than words. Eylemler sözlerden daha yüksek sesle konuşur.

Deeds are fruits, words are but leaves. Eylemler (ağacın) meyveleridir; sözcükler ise ancak sadece yaprakları... Buradaki "are but leaves" yapısını, "are nothing but leaves" şeklinde anlayınız. Yani, "yapraklardan başka birşey değillerdir," şeklinde... "Deed" sözcüğü, "do" fiilinden türeyen ad biçimidir; dolayısıyla "eylem, yapılan şey" anlamı taşıyor. Nitekim, "indeed" sözcüğü de köken olarak "fiiliyatta" anlamındadır. (Türkçe'ye çoğu zaman, "gerçekten de" şeklinde çeviri veriyor.)

He who chooses the crow for his guide must but carry on sniffing dung!! to sniff = koklamak... dung = hayvan fışkısı veya tezek yığını... "But" sözcüğü aynen yukarda açıkladığım işlevde.

  Arkadaşını söyle, kim olduğunu söyleyeyim.

English Equivalents:

A man is known by his friends. to be known by = --- ile tanınmak...

A man is known by the company he keeps. company = eşlik edenler, yanında bulunanlar, eş dost...

  Ne ekersen onu biçersin.

English Near-Equivalent (yakın eşanlamlısı):

As you sow, so shall you reap... Mealen: Nasıl (ne) ekiyorsan, öyle (onu) biçersin/biçeceksin.

You reap what you sow. Ektiğini biçersin.

to sow (sowed - sown) = ekmek, dikmek... to reap = biçmek, hasat etmek...

  the Grim Reaper = Azrail... (Elinde orakla dolanıyor ya... grim = ürkütücü, asık suratlı, ağır, vahim)

Translated & paraphrased:

For a man capable of comprehending, a mosquito is like music (= is sufficient); for the non-comprehending drums and trumpets would be insufficient.

Near-Equivalents:

A word to the wise is enough. wise = bilge kişi.

A word to the wise is enough, and many words won't fill a bushel. = Bilge kişiye tek sözcük yeter; (zaten) bir sürü laf bir araya gelse, bir kile etmez (veya, bir kilelik sepeti doldurmaz)... bushel = "kile" eski bir kuru hacim ölçüsüdür; gözünüzde yarım küfelik bir sepet oluşturabilirsiniz.

Concerning the second part of the proverb (which, in effect, says "laf ola, sepet dola.") Turkish is a lot more expressive: We'd say, "It wouldn't fill a fig's pip"... ("İncir çekirdeğini doldurmaz.")

I have used this book while working with people who speak English as their second language. The book is divided into three levels for beginner, intermediate and advanced. There is also a review section for practicing the previously studied idioms. Each chapter gives you definitions, multiple choice and fill in the blank exercises. This book can help any person who wants to improve their knowledge of idioms.

What a great resource! This book is broken down into three sections: elementary, intermediate, and advanced. This has been a favorite of mine in all my classrooms: with 1st graders, with non-English learners, and with adults learning to read for the first time.

The phrase is listed, then a definition, then a couple of examples of how it's used. Following a list of ~10 phrases, there is a set of exercises that tests knowledge of the phrase and sentences to fill in the blank.

There is an answer key at the back to allow students independence to check answers.

This is a great teaching and reference tool for all classrooms.
